What is a Type 2a Diamond? Understanding Rare Diamond Types

You’ve heard about the 4 C’s of diamonds (carat, cut, clarity and color) but did you know there are different Types of diamonds? Diamonds are also classified by Type, which is determined by the purity of the carbon in the diamond, or whether there are other elements present, such as Nitrogen. While most Type 2a diamonds are colorless, they can also come in slight variations of color such as light blue, light pink, yellow, and light gray / brown.

Did you know? 98-99% of earth-mined diamonds are a Type 1a diamond, which is what you will find in your local jewelry store.

They contain more impurities than Type 2a, such as nitrogen aggregates and isolated nitrogen atoms, and are slightly lower in hardness and carbon purity. Since earth-mined Type 2a diamonds are so rare, they are typically reserved for celebrities and royalty because they come with a very high price tag. Some famous earth-mined Type 2a diamonds include the Hope Diamond, Elizabeth Taylor’s Krupp Diamond, The Cullinan Diamond, and the Pink Legacy Diamond. Do you want to feel like a celebrity sporting the finest quality diamond ring? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

Large type 2a lab grown diamond

All of the lab-grown diamonds at MiaDonna are of the superior Type 2a quality. The type of diamond is important because Type 2a diamonds are brighter and harder than typical Type 1a diamonds, which means your MiaDonna diamond will be more brilliant and harder than an earth-mined diamond.

The increased brilliance comes from their atomic structure. Because there are fewer impurities, Type 2a diamonds do not easily absorb short-wave ultraviolet light wavelengths, and instead allow the light to pass through, making them brighter and more brilliant than Type 1a diamonds.

While lab equipment is required to officially determine the Type of diamond, we’ve heard from many appraisers that they can spot a lab-grown diamond before using equipment simply because the sparkle and quality is visible to the naked eye!

In terms of longevity, Type 2a diamonds will maintain their brilliance and value over time better than the typical Type 1a earth-mined diamonds. Not only can you get a lab-grown diamond for 30-40% less than the cost of an earth-mined diamond, they will retain their brilliance and value for being a Type 2a diamond! More for your money in size, quality, hardness, and brilliance, why wouldn’t you choose lab-grown?

100% carbon, better quality than 98% of earth-mined diamonds, and 100% conflict-free. At MiaDonna, we pride ourselves on only carrying Type 2a lab-grown diamonds, so you truly get the best quality for your purchase.
