In honor of Earth Day's Environmental and Climate Literacy campaign, we've laid out a few facts on the environmental dangers of earth-mined diamonds. Our goals are to deepen the public’s knowledge on the negative impact this has on the earth and inspire action.
As the leader in the lab-created diamond industry, we work hard to bring you the greenest jewelry available. What makes our products environmentally healthy are our green practices. MiaDonna has been awarded the Green America Seal of Approval for setting the highest standards in environmental sustainability and social justice to solve, rather than create, environmental and social problems. Here are a few comparisons to put this into perspective.
The Earth
Each year, more than 150 million carats of diamonds are extracted from the earth. To do so, thousands of acres of soil are removed and processed. The earth-mined diamond industry would like consumers to believe that the benefits of regulated mining outweigh the environmental impact. However, mining is catastrophic to the local environment and its native people. Lab-grown diamonds require minimal land be excavation when compared to that required for an earth mined diamond.
Carbon Neutral Shipments
The high levels of carbon emissions produced during the earth mining process are detrimental to the environment. While the lab-grown diamond process produces a significantly low amount of carbon emissions, MiaDonna takes it a step further by offsetting the CO2 pollution with investments in reforestation projects. For every shipment we make, we plant one tree on your behalf through our partnership with One Tree Planted.
Water Recycling
Hundreds of litres of water are used to produce earth-mined diamonds, while water usage is significantly lower by a factor of 7 when producing lab-grown diamonds. Thanks to an efficient water filtration system, we are able to recycle the water we use in the production process, eliminating the need to use large amounts of fresh drinking water.
